Steven George Daylong

Steven George Daylong (Steve), 59, of Covington, Washington passed away on September 14, 2021.

Steve was born November 19, 1961, at Selfridge Air Force Base in Mount Clemens, Michigan, the first of five children to George and Sharon Daylong.  As an Air Force kid, he spent his early years in various parts of the country.  Steve’s family spent most of his elementary and middle school years between Caldwell, Idaho and Charlevoix, Michigan, where he developed many life-long friendships.

Steve grew up the oldest of five kids, with three brothers, Jeff, Eric (Rick), and Todd, and a little sister, Brandi.  The boys were each a year apart in school, so they were able to play sports together all through their childhood, which attributes to many great memories.  Anytime you get the boys together their stories of childhood come pouring out.  There are many stories of the Daylong boys and their various shenanigans throughout Michigan, Montana, and Idaho; they were usually all together, and all in the mix of things, but their love and loyalty to one another was fierce.  His brothers can attest to Steve being the instigator, or ringleader, and then quietly watching over his younger siblings as they attempted whatever feat was at hand.  Steve, being the oldest, was always the great protector of his sister, Brandi.  She knew she could always count on his sound advice and guidance.

In 1978, the family moved back to Caldwell, Idaho for good.  Steve attended Caldwell Senior High School, graduating in May of 1980.  He maintained very strong ties to the community and to the many friendships he cultivated.

Steve attended college at the University of Idaho, Boise State University, and Puget Sound Christian College where he received his undergraduate degree.  He later received a Master in Divinity from Emanuel School of Religion in Johnson City, Tennessee.

Steve married Carla Sattler in 1986 in Caldwell, Idaho.  On May 25,1995 in Long Beach, California, they welcomed their son Dayne – their greatest pride and joy.  Steve and Carla later divorced in 2000, but remained friends and co-parents, and continue to be part of each other’s families.

Steve and Dayne were very close and loved being together, whether catching a ball game together, camping in the great outdoors, or participating in the Boy Scouts where Steve was a Scout Leader and Dayne earned his Eagle Scout.  Steve was very proud of Dayne and loved watching him learn and grow.  He was most proud of Dayne’s service to God and Country as a Marine Reservist.  Steve loved Dayne with every fiber of his being. 

Steve was a man of deep faith and his ministry to Christ was apparent, not only as a minister in the various churches he was part of, but in every aspect of his life.  He was ordained as a minister at Caldwell First Christian Church in Caldwell, Idaho July 9, 1989, and was a Commissioned Lieutenant Chaplain in the Navy Reserves from May 6, 1992, until May 30, 2000.

Steve was kind, considerate, loving, genuine, and always cool, calm, and collected.  He was a friend to many, whether it was a life-long childhood friend, or a colleague.  He loved to participate in office events such as dressing up in costume at Halloween or entering a cooking contest – he made a mean chili!  Steve loved to cook and try new recipes.  He was a student of life, and while he had many educational awards, degrees, and interests, he also enjoyed learning about things that interested others; never one to shy away from trying something new.

He was a family man who loved and treasured his mom and dad and appreciated all they provided for him and his siblings.  He loved to support his son, nieces, and nephews whenever possible, often watching them in sports or other activities.  Steve was the unofficial family historian, always taking photos, preserving memories, and working to trace our family heritage and ancestors.  His family can attest to his love of sci-fi, especially Star Wars and Star Trek.  He had a knack, or rather a passion, for automating many things in his life.  He had almost everything in his house connected to some sort of an app.  If there was an app for it, Steve probably had it.

After successfully raising his son to be a top-notch marine and getting him started on a good vocational, well-balanced path as an adult, Steve met Camille Ouellette in February 2018.  Steve and Camille shared many of the same interests (running, hiking, travel, music, cooking and fine wine, just to name a few) and were always looking for new adventures together.  After a year of dating and growing in their love for one another, Steve and Camille were married in Maui, Hawaii, on July 23, 2019.  Although they were only married a short time before his passing, they did just about everything together and created many beautiful memories; more than some couples make in a lifetime.

Our family has suffered a profound loss, and words alone will never do justice to the man that Steve was as a son, father, husband, brother, uncle, cousin, nephew, or friend.  He will always have such a special place in our hearts for all the love and support he provided throughout the years, and we are thankful for the abundance of memories that his life has provided.

Steve is preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Peggy and Riley Daylong, and George Grinstine; his maternal grandparents, Laila and Wiljo Hill; and his father, George Gale Daylong.  He is survived by his mother, Sharon Daylong; son, Dayne Daylong; wife, Camille Daylong; brothers, Jeff (Stephanie) Daylong, Eric (Kelly) Daylong, Todd (Shelli) Daylong; sister, Brandi (Chris) Mayes, and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews. 

A funeral service will be held in Covington, Washington on Friday, September 24, 2021, at 7:00 pm at Edline – Yahn & Covington Funeral Home, 27221 156^th Ave SE, Kent, WA 98042.

A private inurnment with military honors will be held at the Idaho Veteran’s Cemetery in Boise, Idaho.  A memorial and celebration of life will be held in Caldwell, Idaho.  Both dates are yet to be determined.
