Florence “Betty” Lauwereins, 93, passed away Monday, September 16, 2019 in Kent, Washington. She was born March 14, 1926 in New Grafton, Nova Scotia to the late William and Ella Messer Cushing. Betty grew up in Niagara Falls and graduated from Niagara Falls High School. She married her late husband Morris on September 21, 1946 to whom she was married for 69 years. Betty and Morris led a beautiful life living mostly in the Chicago area but also spent part of their time in El Paso. She was known as an excellent decorator with an eye for fashion and interior design. Betty and Morris were world travelers which helped Betty develop her already extensive love of music, reading, antiques, all forms of art (especially southwestern) and a devotion to lifelong learning. Her family meant everything to her and was very proud of them all. She was very proud of her volunteer work especially with the Elmhurst Hospital Guild, later being named as the first female to serve on the hospital Board of Governors. Betty also had a green thumb and loved gardening. She had the gift of gab and loved telling stories to anyone who would listen. Survivors include her children Patricia (Alan) Turkot of West Chicago, IL, Daniel (Judy) Lauwereins of Westminster, CO, Jane (David) Griffith of Smyrna, DE, Richard (Mary) Lauwereins of Laguna Beach, CA, Lynn (Fred) Holstein of Maple Valley, WA; grandchildren Jennifer, Jonathan, Tracy, Amy, Nathan, Tyler, Courtney, Alyson, Ashley and Chelsea; great-grandchildren Baron, Michael, Harper, Sawyer, Daphne, Jack, and her brother William Cushing and numerous other relatives and friends. Graveside Services will be Monday, September 23, 2019 at 11:15 am at Tahoma National Cemetery 18600 SE 240th St., Kent, WA. Remembrances to the charity of your choice.
