MaryAnn Jewell Obituary

MaryAnn (Millard) Jewell was born to Frank William Millard and Blanche Anna Reed on September 25, 1936.  She grew up on a farm in a quiet town on the Olympic Peninsula.  As a teenager, she attended and graduated from North Kitsap High School where she was active in sports and played the trumpet in the marching band.

After graduating from high school, she met and married Gary DeWayne Hutchison on September 10, 1955. They were subsequently blessed with five children, Julie, John, Jimmy, and identical twins Jeff and Joe.  MaryAnn cherished her role as a stay-at-home mom and later as a single mom following her divorce on January 20, 1969.

MaryAnn met the love of her life and married Glenn Martin Jewell on October 18, 1974. Glenn brought three children, Wes, Renee, and Sheryl, to their blended family. Maryann and Glenn enjoyed spending time together and they especially enjoyed time spent with friends and family while traveling in their RV.

MaryAnn loved to sew and would make all types of clothing, accessories, and home goods.  Little did she know that her love for sewing would turn into a teaching position where she would teach others how to use the many functions of their computerized sewing machines.

MaryAnn was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and enjoyed serving others. She was affectionately well-known as the neighborhood “mom” and her door was always open for family, friends, and neighbors. Visitors could always count on a listening ear and a variety of snacks.

MaryAnn suffered a stroke on March 30, 2023, and was hospitalized for an extended period.  During her hospitalization and subsequent stay in a critical rehabilitation care center, Glenn was completely devoted to her support. The depth of his love was apparent as he demonstrated daily acts of kindness while MaryAnn fought to recover.  Glenn spent hours a day at her bedside offering support and encouragement.  Heartbreakingly, 5 weeks after her stroke, her beloved companion passed away on May 4, 2023.

MaryAnn’s road to stroke recovery was filled with up and downs. She spent time in several institutions whose caregivers provided admirable support.  In addition, her son Joe was at her side every day.  He demonstrated the love and patience of a saint. Maryann’s spirited side was ever present and caregivers were so grateful when “Joey” arrived each day. Some days as Joe arrived on the first floor, he could hear his mom calling for him from the second floor. She would calm down immediately after his arrival.  MaryAnn was grateful for the many supportive messages and visits she received from family, and friends.  She particularly enjoyed “Gigi” visits from her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

On July 8, 2023, MaryAnn suffered another debilitating stroke from which she would never fully recover.  She passed away peacefully at the Grace Adult Family Home, on July 24, 2023, shortly after a discussion with Joe about the joy she would feel to join her beloved Glenn, Jeffy, Jimmy and Lily.

MaryAnn is survived by her children, Julie (Leo) Boucher, John Hutchison, Joseph Hutchison; step-children, Wesley (Melinda) Jewell, Renee Kendrick, Sheryl (Brian) Burns; 22 grandchildren, and 33 great-grandchildren.

MaryAnn was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn Jewell; sons, Jeff Hutchison, and James Hutchison; great-grandchild Noah Jewell; and her parents Frank and Blanche Millard. Greeting her across the veil was also her beloved pet dog, Lily.

A funeral service will be held in her honor on August 18, 2023, at 11:00 am, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints located at 26106 164th Ave SE, Covington, WA.

MaryAnn will be laid to rest, with her sweet companion Glenn, at the Tahoma National Cemetery. There will be no formal service at the cemetery on the day of her funeral.
